How Does She Do It?
Being a woman in a male-dominated business environment isn’t easy. Often times, I notice that their voices and presence are diminished by the more dominant and vocal male counterparts - and this is coming from me, a young(ish) man who has worked for a fair share of lady bosses.
To me, it seems like female bosses need to work twice or thrice as hard to be heard and to lead employees - and this does not necessarily make them bad bosses. It just shows that they are willing to go the extra mile to ensure the success of the company. And that sounds like an awesome boss to me.
In conjunction with International Women’s Day next month, let’s make a difference for the lady bosses in our life. Here’s three ways you can show your appreciation to your female bosses for all the hard work she puts in:
Unwind, Relax and Network
Sometimes what keeps our female bosses going is knowing there are women going through the same journeys as them. It helps to create a support system that probably only our lady bosses will understand.
On 31 March, RoseValley and DEWI@SMCCI will be organising #INFLUENCEHER, a night where renowned women-preneurs will be sharing about their business stories and awards will be given to businesses in the first ever DEWI Awards. These guest speakers are Neelofa (Founder of Naelofar Hijab) and Rachel Lim (Co-Founder of Love, Bonito).
Attendees will also be treated to an 8-course dinner, lucky draw and special performances from our own local talent, Azura Goh.
Tickets can be purchased on www.rosevalley.co. (Limited seats left!)
Initiate team meals
Another good way to show your female bosses that you care is by initiating team lunches or meals with them. If there’s one thing I’ve noticed women love, it’s good quality time with those she cares for (and food actually). Team meals allows you to bond meaningfully not just with her, but the rest of the team as well.
This bond will bring about trust and understanding within the team, making it easier to work with them for a long time to come.
Offer A Listening Hear
Women deal with problems very differently from men. While men deal with issues head on (or something never), women tend to need to share the problems with others. She might not even need a solution, she just needs to rant and let out her feelings. You might find this useless and confusing but it will make a ton of difference for your lady bosses for you to just be there and simply listen.
It might be difficult sometimes to understand what is it they really really want, but with a little bit of understanding, perspective-taking and time, you and your female bosses can be like BFFs.
